Information about the cable drums

Environment-friendliness of products and production is important for Nestor Cables. Environmental considerations are integrated also into product packaging. Most of the cable products are delivered to customers by using drums made of wood, plywood or plastic. Our partner in handling the recyclable cable drums is Versowood Oy.

When handling the cable drums

  • The cable drum has been designed to be handled in an upright position. The drum should never be stored on its side. (During transport, drum sizes K6-K9 can be placed on their side temporarily).
  • The arrow on side of the cable drum shows the direction of rotation. Pulling the cable off the drum should be done in the opposite direction.
  • When lifting the drum with a steel wire, insert an axle through the drum and attach a lifting spreader. If a spreader is not available, make sure the lifting wire islong enough. This minimizes the risk of damage to the drum’s sides. The drum must be lifted in a balanced position and separate from the other drums. Never leave the loose end of the cable between the drum and the wire.
  • When handling the drum with a forklift, the forks must be longer than the width of the drum. When moving the drum, the mast must be tilted so that the drum stays on the forks. Avoid touching the ground with the forks. The forklift must be stationary before the drum can be placed on the ground. Leave enough space between the
drums to prevent the forklift from striking them. Never use the forklift to push cable drums.
  • Because drums roll easily, they must always be properly fastened
    especially during transport.
  • The drum should also be shored up during transport and storage.

Drum sizes

The measurements of standard cable drums are presented in the table below.

Wood is a natural material, and its weight can flunctuate for example because of humidity. Please notice that the drum weights in the table are estimates, and the presented weights are possible only when the volume of wood mass is 420 kg/m³ and the humidity of wood is 20%. If wood is dryer or wetter, it will also change the weight of the drum.

Measurements in the table are millimetres, weights in kilograms.
